On behalf of the GEO Executive and Technical Programme Committees, it gives me great pleasure to invite you to join us in Bahrain for the 14th Middle East Geosciences Conference and Exhibition.

Since its inception in 1994, the GEO conference and exhibition series has grown to become one of the major geosciences events in the region and beyond, providing a healthy platform for knowledge sharing, exchange and dissemination as well as an excellent opportunity to interact with major upstream companies, service providers and academia.

The GEO Executive Committee made the proper decision to postpone the event to October 2021 in response to the global spread of COVID-19 for the safety and wellbeing of all participants. Since then, the committee has been working relentlessly to ensure the delivery of the highest standards for the GEO conference to the community even during these extraordinary times. The postponement of GEO to October 2021 has provided us with a great opportunity to further enrich the programme with interesting themes related to the impact of the ongoing pandemic.

COVID-19 has hit the world with the ultimate Black-Swan, sending ripples of disruptions all over the world and especially the oil and gas industry. Since then, the landscape has drastically changed, where high cost oil and gas operators are challenged for a more resilient cost structures in order to survive. In response to a diving demand for energy and looming recessions, our industry has once again reacted intelligently and responsibly to balance the market in order to ensure a sustained supply of energy to the globe. Just like it reacted to the 2014 oil glut, the industry has proven its flexibility to overcome challenges and embrace new realities.

As soon as the world overcomes the spread of the pandemic, hopefully soon, a new stronger oil and gas industry will emerge with a new culture and mindset to thrive in a new landscape of business environment, technologies, supply chain strategies and working cultures.

The new industry will take into account the importance of building a solid, nimble and agile industry that will not only be able to mitigate high-impact Black-Swans such as COVID-19, but will more importantly manage to adapt to them and transform them into opportunities.

Geosciences will be an essential element in this transformation. Fourth Industry tools such as digitalization and artificial intelligence will help geoscientists delve into new ways of thinking to take part in the transformation and adoption of the new landscape.

At GEO, we will discuss the impact that COVID-19 inflicted on our industry in general and on geosciences in particular and how we reacted. We will focus on the transformation our industry is going through and explore the opportunities that IR4 and AI have provided during these challenging times.

GEO is a great platform to share experiences, lessons-learned and best practices from around the world in response to the worst Black-Swan that ever hit the oil and gas industry. Hence the new theme “Geosciences in an Era of Transformation: A New Landscape”.

In addition to an array of technical oral and poster presentations, GEO will host plenary sessions led by international experts. The event will also witness an increased presence by universities and research centers supported by a students’ program, interactive short courses and field trips. The Young Professionals and Student Support (YPSS) Committee created a rich program for sponsored students and fellow young professionals. Over 100 university students, 100 educators and volunteers as well as 200 high school students will experience an un-paralleled program that includes soft skills and technical courses, field trips, core workshops, Energy4Me sessions designed specifically for high school students, and the Meet and Greet during which students and YPs get to exchange knowledge and experience with prominent industry leaders and experts.

We encourage you to support and contribute to the scientific community by actively participating in GEO and we look forward to seeing you all in Bahrain in October 2021.
